Te Huringa

Written by Karl Johnstone and Heemi Eruera
Translated by Joe Pihema

Te Huringa expresses the centrality of the taiao within our practice. It embodies the cyclical and relational movements of life that shape how we observe, interpret, respond, and remember. These living rhythms remind us that we are inseparable from the natural world and that creative practice is not a search for fixed outcomes, but a continual pursuit of balance.

Nau mai ko te rā

Ka tū te awarua i te wehenga nei

Ko te mata o tuarangi, he mutunga kore

Ka tū te wā i te iringa o Kōpū

Mahana ai te whenua i te hahana

Puta ai he kano i ōna pūhihi

Nā te ātārangi ko te auaha

Tērā he kakara kei te kohu whakaroau

Rangaranga ana ngā rongo i tērā e mōhiotia ana

Ka wero te ohonga i te māramatanga

Piki, heke. Waihanga ai te taiao i tōna ao hou

Whakairotia ai ngā mātauranga nō roto i te whenua

Ka āta nanao atu te ao tangata, he tohu puta noa

He tohu nui, he tiramaka nō mua tata atu

He whatu pūmahara ki anamata

Ka kitea te pitomata o Papatūānuku

Mapu kau ana te hā o Papatūānuku

Haumiri ana a Hinemoana i te ara tukutuku

Kua takoto te ara i a Tamanuiterā

Ka kōwhiti anō a Meremere-tū-ahiahi

He huringa hou ka whai i ngā oro maruahiahi

Mā te pō tō tātou pitomata e whakawhanake

Te Huringa

The sun rises

In this moment of separation, a threshold forms

Space reveals itself and is borderless

Time stands still, symbolised by the suspension of Venus above

Heat warms the land

Its rays form colour

The shadows create form

The motionless mist carries a sweet scent

The breeze rustles through the flora, becoming audible

The dawn chorus sounds giving semblance to space and time

Your essence tunes into the unfurling materiality

Thoughts of the past are present

Senses interplay with what is known

Consciousness challenges what is understood

Nature shapes a new reality with each rise and fall

Experience is carved from within the land

Humanity passively engages, surrounded by signs

Portents of the imminent past

Memories of the distant future

Earth expresses its potential

The earth draws one last breath

The ocean caresses the shoreline

A definitive path is set by the sun

Venus appears once more

The evening song heralds another rotation

Darkness recalibrates our collective potential
