Manaakitanga is the deliberate practice of welcoming, caring for, and building relationships, while kaitiakitanga guides how Te Pā Tū interacts with the natural world, ensuring the whenua, its resources, and the knowledge that sustains them endure for future generations. Developed by Tauhara North No.2 Trust, Te Pā Tū is grounded in values that uplift people and place.
Pā sit at the epicentre of Māori communities. Historically, they offered physical refuge in times of conflict, serving as protective structures that safeguarded whānau, whenua, and resources. Equally, they have long been sanctuaries for the mind and spirit – places where decisions are made, relationships are affirmed, and identity is strengthened. As communal grounding points, pā remain sites where critical issues are debated, milestones are celebrated, and shared understanding is nurtured.
Type Design
The visual and typographic direction draws inspiration from pā tūwatawata – fortified pā characterised by their outer palisades, defensive walls, and rhythmic structural order. In particular, the design references pou whakarae, the sentinel posts that stand in intervals along the taiapa (perimeter fence). These forms offer a powerful architectural lineage from which the identity of Te Pā Tū emerges.
Design Language
The design language honours customary forms expressed through contemporary materials, composition, and narrative tone. This balance allows Te Pā Tū to speak authentically to tradition while remaining relevant to modern audiences and environments. The intent is not replication, but continuity – recognising pā as living concepts that adapt while retaining their cultural integrity.
Te Pā Tū celebrates manaaki: the act of welcoming, hosting, and uplifting others. The experiences are intentionally shaped to create a sense of belonging, offering visitors a pathway into the values, aspirations, and worldview of the communities who sustain this place. Te Pā Tū extends a universal invitation – one that encourages genuine connection and mutual respect.
